Wamaitha "Wawa" Kamiru was born in PG County MD and was a traveling baby until the age of 10. Elkridge, MD in HOWARD CO. (a little town resting on the edge of Baltimore City), was where she, her older sister, and both parents relocated from Kenya, East Africa. Wawa was always an intelligent child and was praised by her piano teachers for her advancement in classical music, and her academic teachers for being outgoing, optimistic, and quick witted in everything, not to mention a quick learner. She stopped playing piano at the age of 13 and focused her energies towards sports, school, and academics, and slowly grew a phenomenal fascination with hip hop after listening to Missy Elliott's 2001 album Miss E… So Addictive. The hypnotizing synths and drum loops made Wawa curious but until she could prove to her parents that music was a viable career, there was no deep thought of it, but a love grew. Not only did she hide her love for hip hop, but she also had to hide her sexual orientation from her parents until the age of 16. She ignorantly invited a very masculine butch friend to her home for her birthday, in which her father's constructionist took an immediate notice to her friend's appearance and unconsciously said out loud, "woo... she's gay." Her father's old school, foreign upbringing wouldn't allow Wawa to be so free, so all extracurricular activities were cut off until she finished High School, and decided to "change".
In 2006, Wawa attended Howard Community College in Columbia, MD where she majored in Information Systems. She only attended it for a year and a half, during which her father became ill with stomach cancer. Wawa's grades started to slip and questions of what was going to happen to her family started to appear so did the direction of her own life since she wasn't doing well in a traditional college setting. Wawa started writing playful sentences in her notebooks in her African-American Literature, and History courses, and coming up with melodies in her mind, often times just listening to her ex-girlfriend sing and getting even more inspired by her voice. During her time in College she met a man named Zeus Gambino, who opened his studio door and mic to Wawa. At first she was shy but recorded her first track over Erykah Badu's instrumental to "Bag Lady" called "Take a Ride." It was a done deal after she heard how clean her vocals came out and how the lyrics came easy. The process was also fun.
While reading a Vibe magazine, she saw an ad for Full Sail University (then called "Real World Education"). She researched the school, got her information together and went to visit with her ever supporting mother. After reaching and touring the school, Wawa made an immediate decision and the plan was in play. She attended the now accredited Full Sail University from 2008 until 2010 and earned her Bachelor's of Science Degree in Music Business and her Associates in Recording Arts.
Wawa started making music seriously while attending Full Sail University and decided to become her own beat maker, producer, engineer, songwriter, and performer. Her music is geared towards the Urban LGBT community but straight people can also relate to her songs if they have an open mind. Wawa is the new hip hop in Music.
