Interviews

Welcome ladies to the wonderful dream of Domu. Connoisseur of all that is bruk (beats) and is not wasting time in fixing it. An amazing producer that will leave you twitching like rapid eye movement. Female Beatmakers had to stop and have a chat with him to find out what navigates his Sonar Circle and keeps him up at night.
What brought you in into music?
A lack of social skills, not being good at any sport and shyness. I could learn it all on my own or with close friends and show off when I thought I was good enough!

What's important the message or the millions?
Well the message doesn't pay the bills, you die a poor but respected person. It depends, I suppose it is a balance. If you maintain a living but also respect, then you are blessed. If you sell millions and remain respected, you are a star. If you sell out for 5 minutes for the money, lose all your respect and friends then you are a fool ?

Favorite artist in your I pod at the moment?
Always a tricky one. I really like the new Portishead album, and seijis mix of Erykah Badu.

Do you know any female producers or Beatmakers?
Well I know you. Also DJ Sunshine in Oslo, my friend Jo Sweeney in Newport has been making some beats this year. I’m sure there are loads, and I hope this network brings them together.

What was the best advice given to you either in music or in personal life?
I guess from 4hero as a teenager I heard them say "Keep your feet on the ground, or else they re six feet under". So I guess remaining grounded through the ups and downs of my minimal fame in our music world. To be proud yet' humble. And my mum always used to say "It won't matter tomorrow" and most of the time it doesn't.

What is your motivation?
To keep trying to make and play innovative heartfelt music. To communicate something beyond the dance floor and try to touch people who get that little tingle from a song when it hits them inside. Seeing and hearing people enjoying music.

If you did not come from earth what planet would you come from and what language would they speak there?

I guess in the star wars universe I would come from the planet Mandatory, and be a feared hunter of Jedi/Sith.

If you was a musical super hero what would be your weapon of choice?
The ability to pause time and work for hours on something, or defeat an enemy by slowly building a complicated wall of harmonies and beats around them when time was paused. Basically I'm alluring to the fact that I can't play keys very well and have tricked people over the years by playing in chords one at a time and editing them very well.

What are your opinions of the music industry today?
I used to be so anti pop, but now I realise that for all the lazy peddling of muck and running a style into the ground, they do present some true stars of various genres. I think my scene is in that troubled period now where the kids have no idea what our music was and are all into dubstep. The links back to fusion or real hip hop or even funk breaks is a bit lost. Everything is free at the touch of a button, and music has become a bit cheap. Only the strongest survive, and I aint saying I’m gonna.

Any technical hints or tips you can share?
Learn something thoroughly before you start learning other things. If you want a drum machine, buy that first. Then buy a sequencer, then learn that. Learning too much at once is daunting and can make you give up. Also, don’t have too many unfinished tracks on your hard drives cos it gets depressing to see them all the time. If it isn’t going anywhere, back it up and forget about it. If it is meant to be you will find it again, somehow.

My mother and father where musicians so I grew up in a musical house. There were always musicians at our house all the time when I was a lid so I picked it up honestly.

What's important the message or the millions?
The message and the spiritual feeling music gives you fa sho. Cause you can get all that money with some music you don't even like and you still won't be happy fully with your situation so get the millions on something you truly are spiritually into ya dig?

Any hints or tips you can share?
Just to stay true to what you feel and what you like. Don’t mold yourself into something you aren't for someone else for money or notoriety. Cause if someone company wants to pay the fake you allot of money they must be fake too and with fake business comes fake promises.
