I only spin vinyl.
I am still a "new" dj and this is the way I learned, on two technics and a vestax so even though I respect pure vinyl dj's more because we are doing the work (physical digging, carrying and otherwise), I understand that times have moved forward and pure vinyl dj'ing is becoming endangered... A popular local female dj recently responded to an interviewer by explaining, "I just took some dj classes so that my friend and i could take over the los angeles social scene". Wow... and you know what, she and her friend are pretty fucking popular with their laptops and their cute outfits and their ever-growing following. So, as an artist, this type of easy laptop shinanigans is a bit frustrating to me. At the same time I do want to learn Serato so I can use it as a tool for my artistry. I guess I can't hate on those who just play off of their laptops for fun! Did I even answer the question, lol!
It’s funny, I started off as a Beatmaker, then I got asked to DJ at a few venues. I had never DJ’ed before, only on my computer by using Virtual Dj (Which is similar to Serato). I brought my laptop but it couldn’t handle being in the public eye and basically glitched on every song that I played. I used that laptop twice before I packed it in and decided to use CDs. I have never had money to spend on vinyl, not for the type of music that I do- 70s soul and rare groove, jazz, which can eat at your pocket. Now I have my own radio show and I enjoy using CDs even though when I got scared and ran to my DJ friends on how to mix, I was taught on Vinyl. Vinyl are better sounding, CDs are more portable and MP3s are more efficient . Each have pros and cons. Currently I am only using CDs until I win the lottery to buy all them vinyl’s I would like to have in my mansion.
